How to Sleep After a Breast Augmentation or Mommy Makeover

When it comes to recovering from breast augmentation or a mommy makeover here in St. Louis, little is as important as getting plenty of sleep and restorative rest. Unfortunately, with swelling, new implants, and tight compression garments involved, it can be challenging to get the amount of slumber your body needs to properly heal itself.

In this blog post, we’ll share a few of the best tips from our plastic surgeons here in Missouri to help make your recovery as restful and comfortable as possible.

Sleep in a recliner at first.

Both breast augmentation and tummy tuck require you to sleep with your upper half elevated. Keeping your torso raised as you sleep will help minimize swelling and fluid buildup in your upper body and abdomen during the first couple of weeks.

Sleeping in this position will also make it easier for you to transition from reclining to standing, minimizing strain on your upper body muscles and abdomen.

After the recliner, sleep on your back.

Sleeping on your back is beneficial in general, but it’s especially helpful during recovery after surgery. It prevents excess pressure on your chest and abdomen that may cause discomfort or compromise your results.

If you normally sleep on your stomach or your side and worry that sleeping on your back may be difficult, you can practice for a couple of weeks before your surgery to become more comfortable with it. Some people find it helpful to sleep with pillows under each of their arms to prevent them from tossing and turning or rolling over to their stomachs.

Wear supportive garments while you sleep.

Wearing a compression garment overnight helps reduce swelling, ease tension on your incisions, and protect your treated areas to ensure a smooth and even result. Your surgeon will let you know how long you’ll need to wear these garments.

Cut down on sleep inhibitors.

It can be difficult to make the transition from your usual sleep habits to a modified routine. This can be easier if you avoid foods and habits that make it harder for you to fall and stay asleep.

Caffeine, alcohol, sugar, and screen time can keep you awake and make it difficult for you to get the rest you need. Try cutting back on these and instead focus on eating nutrient-rich foods and drinking plenty of water.

Move around during the day.

While you shouldn’t jump back into intense exercise too soon, short walks throughout the day can improve circulation and help regulate your sleep schedule. Even just walking around the house can reduce your likelihood of blood clots and tire your body out so that you’re able to sleep more easily.
